Saying Thank You

I was having a rough week. It wasn’t just the week, it was the three months of stress and emotion leading up to this week. I wasn’t sleeping well and my night time regimen had been consisting of 3 ibuprofen and a sleeping pill. Not a good thing. In my every day life I was plugging along. My book got finished, my podcast interviews were started and my website was being built, my blog was less consistent but going well. I was on unemployment and not successfully finding a job, which meant I was able to spend the summer home with the kids which I hadn’t done in 11 years. I was running, meeting friends, taking online webinars and classes. I hope other than D no one knew how much I was falling apart inside. D knew because he sees the worst of me and my stress leaked out in very unattractive bursts of crying, insecurity, raising my voice and wondering if he’d figure out I’m crazy and want to climb out the window in the middle of the night. So far, he’s still sleeping next to me. Continue reading

Reno Tahoe Odyssey 2016

The Reno Tahoe Odyssey is in the books. The race I wasn’t sure I’d ever do again but I’m so glad I did. 178 miles, 2 vans, 12 people – all of us women from our 5:20 am running group. The majority of the women I knew, the ones I didn’t know well I knew very well by the end. It took us just over 30 hours to complete and we had a total of 2 hours of sleep on one of our breaks. People who have never run a relay think you’re crazy and don’t get it but those of us who have taken the leap know all too well how amazing they are. Continue reading

Weekend Away

D and I got away last weekend for about 48 hours. It’s the longest we’ve ever been gone without kids, although our older daughter watched her younger sister, so we managed to keep the family together. They did great (as was expected) and we got fun updates on their weekend. Continue reading

Giving Reviews Make Me Happy

I’ve had a couple people comment lately that I must get a lot of stuff with the way I pimp out certain companies. Nope. Let me fill you in on something, friends….. Compliments are free. So is saying thank you. So is “liking” someones picture or post. Believe it or not, leaving a comment is also free!! I kid you not….. Referring someone is ALSO free!! One of my favorite extroverted tendencies is my love of connecting people. It’s like a high for me. I don’t even care if I introduce two people and I’m no longer involved in the circle. I just get off on putting people together who can mean something to each other. It’s amazing.  Continue reading

Winter Running

It’s cold. Sure, not as cold as Alaska when I lived there, but still cold. It snows too. Not always as much as this year and not as much as other places, but we get it. This year quite a bit of it, relatively speaking. Ice. It’s everywhere. I’ve only gone running in temps as low as 13* this year. I’ve also bypassed running when the roads have been excessively crappy which seems like a lot. I used to run no matter what, but then I broke my foot. That taught me to be more of a fair weather runner – or at least less stupid about running. Winter running isn’t just about the clothing you wear – although that makes it manageable – it’s about being safe and following rules differently. Continue reading

Women Are Amazing

A friend recently posted the below on Facebook. It’s so true. Not that men aren’t equally amazing. They are. I’ve never understood a couple of things. One: Why don’t women embrace being women. That means we aren’t men, probably shouldn’t be treated like them, are unique and how amazing is that? Two: Why don’t we support each other more? We’re all women, we all go through a list of the same issues, we’re all struggling in similar ways. Geez, band together and raise each other up. Continue reading

Cold Weather Running

It’s cold here in Reno. But not always. Within a week I ran in weather that was in the 50’s, the 30’s, the 20’s and the teens – not in that order. There was wind up to 20 mph that I ran in and once it rained.  I opted out on the day it was raining and 30 mph winds, but otherwise, I’m game.  The problem I have is figuring out what to wear.  Not in a “geez, my shoes should really match my belt” sort of way, but in a how many layers this time?????  If weather is consistent, it’s easy but when it’s jumping around all the time I have layering ADD.   Continue reading

Sneaking Away Without Sneaking

Date night is imperative in a relationship with kids.  I look forward to Saturday night and I won’t lie, it’s on a countdown some weeks.  We have some rules about date night.  No discussing our relationship and no discussing the kids.  This is both a relief and a challenge, but date night is about us tapping in to each other, focusing on each other, feeling special and important and getting away from the issues that cause stress.  It’s not only about staying in love but also about remembering that we do love each other and, hopefully, loving each other even more.  The challenge about not discussing our relationship or the kids is that those are two things that consume a lot of our life.   Continue reading

Weight Loss, Running and Supplements

I broke my foot a year ago, was in a boot, couldn’t run for over 6 months and put on 12 pounds.  Twelve might not be a big number, especially since I was at a good weight, but I didn’t want to keep it on.  I started running in March – and I use the word “running” loosely since it started as walking a mile on a treadmill.  In October I ran my first half marathon in 18 months and I’m consistently running about 20 miles a week over 3 different days.  I took seven months to build up to that.  Prior to the break I was running about 50 miles per week but I was definitely over training.  After 7 months of slowly easing back into running, I lost 5 pounds and just stayed there.
