My primary goal in every single race is to have fun. Life is too short to spend it agonizing over the little things that bring you down. Altering your perception to having this as your #1 goal makes the disappointments so much easier. It is such a rare thing for me to go to an event and NOT have fun. The events are why I run. To surround myself with like-minded people striving to be healthy, to be outside, to push ourselves, to be better. Sure, not all races go as planned. Of course there are times that it’s frustrating. Absolutely, even when having fun an event can feel like it really sucked. But attitude is everything and remembering to have fun first and foremost takes the sting out of the dings. After all, I GET to run. The people that inspire me to tears, the energy, the connections. I GET to do this. It is truly a blessing.
Being single can be challenging. Finding a date that’s cute, funny, spontaneous, engaging, witty, smart. Tough. Can’t even tell you how tough it is out there!! Sometimes, though, when you least expect it, you have one of those dates. Where you’re elated and smiling for days afterwards. You just can’t believe your luck. Friday night, I had one of those dates. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to see my date often but I just have to say…. For anyone dating me after. You have your work cut out for you!!! Top this!!! This girl knows how to carb load before a race!! (I know she looks like me. Not one of mine though. I will, however, borrow her from my friend Josie on occasion….)
Meters. Is that right??? I’m still getting used to the measurements for swim. At any rate, my Irongirl race is 500. At Wednesday’s swim I completed 1300. As impressive as that may sound, it’s not really. It was warm up, two sets of what I would equate to interval training in running??? It’s a start/stop/rest periods/chatting/going slow/stopping to choke on water I inhaled, etc…. A race is 500 all out, no stopping to chat and clear the goggles swim. The pool is very different than competing with 800 wet-suit clad, competitive women in a lake. For me I want to get through the swim portion, peel my wet-suit off and get on my bike. It’s the biggest struggle of the triathlon for me.
The girls and I were talking about our goals for Irongirl.
- Enjoy the weekend. Planning on it. From the 7 hour drive, the expo, what happens in Vegas goes on Facebook, meeting a good friend of mine who I absolutely can’t wait to see; enjoying the weekend is priority #1 and I’m confidant I can accomplish this
- Finish the race. There are always issues that can come up. The bike portion of a tri is probably the single biggest section where technically things can go wrong. I know nearly nothing about fixing a bike. This would probably cause a DNF. Even though this isn’t an IronMan distance, getting through it is priority #2. I want to see that finish line.
- I’m not familiar enough with doing tri’s (since I’ve only done one Super Sprint) to have a time goal. In running I finish in the top 10% and usually closer to the top 5% so I’m hoping to stay fairly consistent with that. If there’s about 800 women competing, I hope to be in the top 100.
- Podium. Well, yes, every race I hope for the podium. I don’t expect it, but I do hope for it. Not at all expecting it for this race. But want it?? Yes. Of course.
Fairly good and realistic goals for the race. It’s 4 weeks away – FOUR WEEKS!!!!! It’s coming fast and the 6 of us travelling are getting more and more excited. Now for the most important part of the trip……. Packing!!!
Yes, temperatures are indeed changing. The morning bike the team takes has moved inside. Thankfully I have teammates with great garage space, coffee, a bathroom and an open door policy. We meet at 6 am in the dark and cold and get our bike on. I do like being outside every chance I get, however lining up going nowhere with people I truly love is awesome also. We can chat, laugh, encourage each other. We get off the bikes and run 2 miles, get back on. Get off and run 4 miles….. It’s actually pretty fun for those of us who are maybe just a little crazy.
Track season is coming to a close. It’s been a pretty fantastic first season for me. I hadn’t been on a track since Jr High School which was pretty much in the dark ages…. No comment. I learned a lot about pushing myself in a new way, of the mental games that nearly consume us when we run. 5K on a track?? Seriously?? Oh, 16 laps instead? Where do I sign up!!! I learned what the distances mean – sort of….. 200’s, 400’s….. Track has challenged me in a way I had never been challenged before.
For the second to last practice we did a timed mile. That was our first track practice as well. I don’t know what I ran at the beginning of the season, but at the end I wanted to run a 7 minute mile or sub-7. I ran a 7:23 which I suppose will do. I always wonder if I could have pushed harder, done more, but I do know that while I’m running I feel like I’m giving it all I’ve got.
The track friends I’ve made this season are people I hope to never lose touch with. Sublime men and women whom I admire and respect. Here’s to the end of an era.
6 Mile Canyon in Virginia City was on the agenda for a team run. 6 miles is a smokescreen statement – when you run, you have to get back to your car…. So it’s really 12 mile canyon. Or, for me, 8 miles. 4 down, 4 back. The word “canyon” depicts a descent which was the case. Kristen has named these runs “Psycho Sundays” and indeed that is a fitting title. We ran downhill 1700 feet in altitude. That can only mean one thing. You have to run back up. Although it was ALL downhill, the steepest section down was the first mile – again, I know I’m a genius when I tell you that means the steepest section back is the last mile. You’re welcome. I’m here for advice too.
It was the first run that I had to admit Autumn is in the air. Changing leaves, crisp, cool air. Beautiful and serene location. Difficult? Yes. Worth it? Naturally. Thanks to Kristen for taking pictures on the run….. It really was this beautiful.
With a blog and being a picture fanatic, I ask my kids to take a lot of pictures. A lot. And I attempt to take them myself of myself but we’ve all seen the results. Yes, so ask the kiddos….
I recently asked Alana if she could please take a picture. She did. One of me. This is what I got on my phone later when I looked…. “What??? You asked if I could take pictures. I did!!! You weren’t specific on what you who was in the pictures!!”
Exercise is exhausting. Obviously. I’m always hungry after a good run. Thankfully I have amazing teammates who are very resourceful.
Learning to love the swim. Ok, Maybe more like learning to tolerate and possibly get better at the swim…. I’m working on it. It’s my weakest 1/3 of the triathlon. I really just want to get through it. So I’m trying. My triathlon is equivalent to 20 laps in the pool. Last pool workout, I did 40. Although that may sound impressive, they aren’t anywhere close to consecutive. That’s nearly an hour workout. So, if I want to get through the swim in about 45 minutes and do a backstroke, I’m good.
Swimming, although unnatural in so many ways, feels incredible. A full body muscle workout and stretch, once I get in and get moving I like the way I feel. Here’s to moving out of your comfort zone!
