People are posting wish lists and wants all over the internet. First of all, I say why limit it to the holidays?? I want things year round!! Don’t feel pressured to give me gifts because the calendar tells you it’s time – feel free to shop whenever the urge hits you!!

It may be difficult to believe but I don’t only want running gear. Sure it’s on the top of the list, but the list is long…

Yeah baby!!

Yeah baby!!  Kindle Fire HD 8.9″  Since I didn’t get it for my birthday it’s still top on my list

As a hairdresser, I’m in the beauty industry so I love all things sparkly.  I’d be thrilled with some of the makeup I use all wrapped up in a pretty bag, some protein powder or vitamins from Complete Nutrition or my Dermalogica product.  Things I use every day and cost money.  Gift certificates are one of my favorite things – it’s 2 gifts.  First you get to open it and see what it is, second you get to go spend it.  LOVE!!!  Daniela Corte is a favorite designer if you need a hint.  Deka is another great place and I still want a bag from Fitmark to stash my computer, crap for the salon and workout gear.  Endless possibilities.

BodyRock Sport Maya Yoganista Collection sport bra, Show 'Em Who's Boss Cargo Leggings and Ruby Gloves. Ready for anything stretching and a quick workout circuit!!

For running my #1 request would be a gift certificate to BodyRock Sport.  No big surprise there!!  Second would probably be a gift certificate at Reno Running Company.  Sure, they have my stats on file there so you could just grab and go which would be absolutely fine, but again – it’s fun to get to shop.  So either way I’m thankful.  Oiselle is another company I adore – best running shorts ever!!!  Sure you could get me the Polar GPS watch I want for a low $450 if you’re so inclined but it’s fine to keep it simple.  Etsy has so many artists listed with running jewelry and ornaments that it would be impossible not to find something fitting.

So, go!!  Shop!!  Don’t hesitate!!  Get your running buddy’s sizes and preferences and shop year round!!!

Thursday Run

Didn’t happen…. Yes, I know. I feel like a total slacker. It was 47* and 27 mph winds when I was supposed to leave tonight. So, nice temperature but the wind has been exhausting the last couple of days. I slept horribly last night. Woke up at 2:30 am completely stressed because I bought a kennel off Craigslist last night for the new dog I’m planning on picking up Monday morning (got a screaming deal too!!). Yes, I decided. No Kindle Fire HD 8.9″…… So, it’s time to start a new puppy training which I love and I also feel that happy nervousness – I’m counting down the days now – and I couldn’t sleep.  Silly, really, but that knowledge didn’t help me fall back to sleep.  My mother in law is here visiting, all the kids found out about the dog, blah, blah, blah….  I looked at the clock and realized I had to get ready to go and completely hit a wall.  So, not only did I not do my run (which I always feel badly about because I know if I get out there, it’s always worth it) I ate pizza.  Not that I”m anti-pizza mind you but I don’t eat it often and I don’t usually miss a run.

This didn’t happen tonight

Good news??  Tomorrow is another day.  My training isn’t nearly shot and I will persevere.  Training is about pushing yourself but not beating yourself up.

Make A Freaking Decision!!!

My birthday is coming up December 15th.  I know, you all have your pen and paper out ready to write down my wish list and get out there and shop.  Thank you, but that’s not what this is about.  Usually this is how my bday goes down…..  I figure out what I want, I purchase it, I give it to my older daughter, she calls in all the kids, they get to see it, they all wrap it, I open it and act surprised.  This is a good system.  It puts no pressure on Chris or the kids to figure out what I want.  I SO dislike when women complain about how their partner just “doesn’t get them” and always screws up the holidays.  Seriously?  I don’t “get” what Chris wants, we are adults the last I checked and why would I want to set my husband up for certain failure???  So what if he doesn’t know??  He has a general idea just like I do for him.  He’s a wakeboard freak but in no way do I feel competent to make a purchase for him.  I’d have to ask him.  IN addition wish lists  often change.  What I want today might be superseded by something else tomorrow.  Maybe I got a screaming deal on Ebay and already purchased it or maybe an opportunity presented itself like when I got my bike trainer that changed the priority order?  I’m female after all.  You never know when the winds of change will blow.

At any rate, my birthday.  42 in case you were wondering.  How that happened, I’ll never know but when my 12 year old said that telling people I”m 28 for the 14th time actually sounds older than 42, I listened….  So I am actually turning 42.  Yikes!

I’ve wanted a Kindle Fire HD for a while.  I love, love, love my old kindle.  Upgrading isn’t necessary, but the HD Fire has web capability so maybe I wouldn’t have to take my laptop with me everywhere.  If I could blog, email, Facebook, etc.. on it it would reduce my load and streamline things for me PLUS I’d be able to continue my voracious reading habit.  Naturally, I want the 8.9″  So Chris asked if this is what I want for my bday.  Why yes, yes it is!!

Yeah baby!!

On a side note, I’ve been wanting to get a new dog.  Puppy actually, although the thought of another young one makes me sigh and brace myself for the work.  Our 3 dogs are 11 and no longer running companions.  Their health isn’t bad yet, but they’re definitely going downhill.  I’d like to get a new dog now so she’s very socialized and my dogs good behaviors are there to reinforce.  My kids are all older now and (so they say) are ready to pitch in.  We’ve been presented with 3 dogs in the last 6 months and it just hasn’t been right for one reason or another.  But now….

Uh, yeah, she’s cute!! The dog isn’t bad either!! HAHAHA!!

Some friends of Bri’s found this girl wandering the streets.  She came to the house, met the dogs (not the kids!!) and spent some time with us.  She’s at the shelter now so if she has owners they have 5 days to claim her.  She’ll also get shots, microchip and hopefully is old enough to get fixed.  On Monday we can pick her up or decide to allow someone else to adopt her.  BUT (here’s the catch) to get a new dog, the kennel, leash, etc …  I don’t get the kindle.  It’s one of the other.  Crap.

A blog I follow – Another Mother Runner – did an article on what a mother runner looks like. Part 2 came out today and I’m in it!! Yes, I’m wearing BodyRock Sport bra and Running Skirts skirt. The picture was taken after the Running With The Bears half marathon this past August. I finished 14th overall, 4th female and 1st in my age division.

This picture has been all over the internet lately. It’s awe inspiring!!!

One of my favorite things about running is that there is no “running body”.  At any start line you may be able to pick out the elite runners and the runners who will struggle, but the vast percentage of runners you can’t gauge.  That means anyone can be a runner – there are no stipulations.  How fantastic is that??!!  So get out there and get your run on!!!

What a mother runner looks like. 7 pregnancies, hysterectomy, 41 years old.

Gypsy Heart

I’ve lived in so many places and traveled so much that you’d think I’m part gypsy. With the exception of Canada, I’ve never been outside of the USA and although I feel fortunate to have seen a lot, there’s still so much to see!!  I’ve always thought it would be nice to have a home that I love and use it as a base to travel from.  Lack of money, a spouse and kids interrupted that dream from being realized but it still lurks in the depths of my mind.  I have a list of places I’d like to visit but honestly, I’d probably pick up and go nearly anywhere.  Running makes traveling a more rich and unique experience because it enables you to see the country side from an uncommon vantage point.  One more reason to travel!!

I still have the same limitations on my travel dreams as I have for nearly 20 years but that hasn’t deterred my vision of seeing far off places.  In my mind, I’m already gone….  Here’s to success!!

Back To Reality

When I woke up this morning and called the airport it was 32* with no wind. Ahh… 60* weather I will yearn for you but I’m extremely grateful for no wind. I’ll take pretty much any weather if wind is not involved.  Weather in the 30’s is actually pretty nice. Not so cold you think you’re breathing in ice chips and have to break out the polar ice cap gear.  Pleasant actually.  Several of my teammates were at Reno Running Company this morning again which is fantastic.  More people = less chance I’ll get lost.  For real.

Some of my teammates at RRC!

We logged 5.88 miles slow since most of them are training for CIM marathon next weekend and are beginning to taper.  Who am I to not be supportive of that??!!  I HAD to run slow to be supportive!  I’m just that great a teammate and friend.  You’re welcome.  The run (as always) is hilly – those long, slow, unending hills but it felt so extraordinary to be outside and running!!!

Hey money maker!! Lunch is still NOT on me!

Oh, yes, our tree is up. Fun times last night with the family!!

It’s A Reno Thing

Reno weather is never the same.  If you don’t like it – wait – it’ll change.  In the last week I’ve run in 42* with 25 mph winds, 30*, 23* with 15 mph winds and today I ran in 61*.  Go figure.  I never put away winter or summer clothes because, quite honestly, I might need them.  In the winter these warmer days give enough reprieve from the cold that I can tolerate the few months of bundling up.  Barely.  I was psyched we got some nice temps on a day off.  Time for a run!!!!  Just 4  miles by my house but getting out is getting out.  In the 60* range, it’s bliss!

Oiselle Roga shorts and BodyRock Sport Giselle bra – love the weather!!

I got to wear the only running shorts I like.  Oiselle Roga Shorts.  Also (as always) wearing a BodyRock Sport bra.  This was the first one I bought – the Giselle – and I still love her just as much as when I got her.  On the agenda today was a 4 mile run.  We park the car almost 2 miles down the street from our house, run past the house to the end of our road and turn around.  We can see the kids quite a bit since our house is up on a hill and they were all outside playing today so I got yelled at as I ran past.  Awesome-ness!

Oiselle’s Roga shorts are the only running shorts I wear. BodyRock’s Giselle bra was my first BodyRock love and I still feel special putting it on. Now if I could RUN like a gazelle….

There are 3 large hills the first two miles going up and 3 small hills going down.  Once I hit the turn around I know it’s (almost) all downhill from there.  I did stop at my driveway for water (and a picture) but otherwise it was a steady run.  When I ran past the second time and was headed down the street I heard one of the kids yell “Hey Mom!!  Can we have some ice cream?”  I yelled back “Yes!” thinking they probably wouldn’t hear me but with the hoots of excitement that followed, I figured when I got home we’d be out of ice cream.

Taylor biked about 6 miles with me today with all the back and forth he did. Love that.

I averaged 8:31 minute miles.  Thought it would be a little faster, but I wasn’t racing anyone.  A mile is a mile.  It felt fantastic to get out in the phenomenal weather we had today, spend time with the kids, watch them play outside.

Kezia was on camera duty today. She’s the bomb!! Here we are post run.  Thanks Kez!!

Back shot. Take THAT Roga shorts!!

There’s so much controversy about stretching and running. Before? After? During? At the finish line? At the stop lights when you’re waiting for the light to change?  When you’re pretending you’re not waiting for a slower runner?  When you want to ditch someone who won’t stop talking while running??  SO MANY OPTIONS!!!

I stretch when I feel like I need to which is probably not often enough.  Just a guess.  Actually I try to stretch quite often. My coach has us stretch and teaches us specific stretching techniques which forces me to be more limber but I always feel like I need more. Yoga!!!!  I don’t utilize yoga as often as I should but it’s a fantastic way for us runners to get in the stretching we so need.   Utilizing a DVD is the easiest way for me to do yoga.  Planning on stretching before having that tight, uncomfortable feeling is best so get your stretch on!!!

Yoga anyone??  BodyRock Sport Maya Yoganista Collection sport bra, Show ‘Em Who’s Boss Cargo Leggings and Ruby Gloves. Ready for anything stretching and a quick workout circuit!!

Back To Being Selfish and Rude!!

Kidding!! I try to be thankful every day, not just during the holidays. Honestly I do. When Bri was born over 20 years ago, life took on new meaning. I was no longer living for myself or my spouse. What I did – who I am – would shape this little person. Doing foster care for so many years was a constant reminder of how tough life can be – just in case I had forgotten my own childhood.  I fall short all the time, but I do strive to be better, be a good example and my kids certainly allow me to feel that more acutely.

Thanksgiving is a mixed holiday for me.  There’s so much planning and preparation.  So much hype, enthusiasm and excitement attached to this day.  After spending so much money on the food and taking so much time, it feels like I blink and it’s over.  To counteract this feeling, I don’t get worked up, never take on more than I feel comfortable with and make it a very family involved holiday.  Everyone helps cook and clean up.  We play music and share in the event.  We invite “stragglers” – people who don’t have family locally.  Usually it’s a hodge podge of people.  This year was very low key – same food, just very relaxed.  It was delightful.  For that I am truly thankful.  Now…..  On to Christmas decorating!!

Kicking Off Being Thankful

Morning team run. 20 hill repeats. Holy crap!! Hills are still my weakness but I’m getting better at them. I only did 14 of the repeats because I had to get home to do the cooking for a crowd thing….. Still, a great way to start any day – especially Thanksgiving.
